Mary’s Manger is a women’s shelter providing free accommodation and food for women suffering intimate partner abuse. It is a Kenyan based charity that was established in 2016 to address the pervasive culture of marital abuse against women. Through our outspoken and fearless founder and ambassador, Njeri Mucheru (herself a survivor of marital abuse www.njerimucheru.com,) Marys Manger has brought the conversation on marital abuse to the public space.
Njeri Mucheru has, since 2013, through her social media, print media and television platforms, been advocating for the protection and rights of women suffering marital abuse – in particular, the right for these women to speak out freely against the abuse. Njeri has also been helping such women by offering them legal advice, financial assistance, first aid counselling and emotional support at no charge.
In 2016, Njeri Mucheru, took on the daunting task of expanding her operations by donating a piece of land and constructing additional accommodation for 6 women and their children on it and forming the charity, Mary’s Manger to run the home. Mary’s Manger aims to build a critical mass of change agents committed to eradicating marital abuse, to advance women’s rights to enable a comprehensive response to marital abuse, to promote effective prevention of and response to marital abuse through advocacy at the community, national, regional and international levels and to strengthen Mary’s Manger’s institutional capacity to achieve its mission.
